Teruhiko Toda earned his Bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance from the Tokyo College of Music, followed by a graduate degree in Piano Accompaniment. Following graduation, he was an associate professor at the Tokyo College of Music (1997-2007) and Showa Academia Musicae (1999-2007) where he coached opera students in both the undergraduate and graduate programs. He started his career as a solo pianist where he performed a recital at the Citta della Pieve Music Festival in Italy in 1996. In the past positions, he worked as an opera Conductor, Assistant Conductor and Pianist/Coach in Tokyo. Mr. Toda has been engaged by a variety of professional opera companies and orchestras, including, New National Theatre Tokyo, the RAI Torino Symphony Orchestra, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra. Throughout his career, he has worked with world famous opera singers and conductors including Guiseppe Giacomini, Kurt Moll, Dan Ettinger, Phillip Auguin, and others. His operatic repertoire includes over 60 complete operas, including several Wagner’s productions. He also performed in several world premiere opera productions including “Osude” by Janacek and “Das Verratene Meer” by Henze. Mr. Toda had served as the Music Director of Houston Grand Opera’s Opera to Go program for several years. He has presented several world premiere productions and has performed throughout Texas. His article about the Houston Grand Opera’s “Opera to Go!” program was published in the Ongaku-no Tomo-sya, the renowned Japanese Classical music magazine. He also served as the Assistant Conductor/Head Repetiteur with Opera in the Heights, also as an Assistant Conductor/Pianist Coach with Gilbert and Sullivan Society Houston. Other engagements include a performance for President George H. W. Bush, and performing with world famous Mezzo Soprano Denyce Graves in her Houston recital, Baritone Ryan McKinney, and a number of recitals with dramatic Soprano Michelle Bradley from the Metropolitan Opera.
